Are they worthless? Are they facts? You Decide.
The Sahara Desert expands at a rate of about 1 km each month.
That cannot be true!! – Ok if the Sahara dessert gets bigger by 1 km a month it would be GIGANTIC!! If it had gone on like that for a few hundred years it would huge and would eventually cover a few countries if it hadnt already. Because it would gain 12 km each year, and lets say it went on for a hundred years like that. Thats 1200 km it gained! I say no way!
At least! – It may seem amazing, but the Sahara Desert is about 9 MILLION square kilometers. It has been around for at least 7,000,000 years (http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/311/5762/821, and http://www.johnhawks.net/weblog/reviews/climate/sahara_origin_schuster_2006.html), but it is unlikely that it grew very quickly until about 6,000 years ago. If we say that the desert grew, say, 6,000,000 km2 in 6,000 years, then the average rate of expansion for the last 6,000 years has been 1,000 kilometers per year!!! I would doubt that it expands so much any more, but I would bet that it grows more than 12 kilometers per year.
