    True, sorta… – …if you include flint-and-steel, or any open flame. The ‘safety match’ was only marketed in the mid-1800′s, and perfected early last century (1900′s)…

    chemicals – there is sulfer-something on a matchstick so when you stick a match the sulfer is heated then there is a chemical reaction and fire- how many people played with chemicals before the 1900′s?

    think about it… – The lighter is a lot more simple than a match. The match uses chemicals which they didn’t have back then, while the lighter just releses gas and creates a spark to light it.
