The reason firehouses have circular stairways is from the days when the engines were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled on the ground floor and figured out how to climb straight staircases.

WTF – If the horses were stabled on the ground floor, not the basement or 2nd story, then why the hell did they need to climb stairs to begin with?? I do know that the early firefighter had their “Equipment” downstairs and slept and ate upstairs. Now, the horses that were on the gound floor, did they climb the stairs to sleep or eat with the firefighters?? Was there a bit a beastality going on?? Kind of defeats being “stabled”.
